Avatar: The Way of Water (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the official soundtrack album of the film Avatar: The Way of Water.[1] It was composed by Simon Franglen, a friend of James Horner, the composer of the first Avatar soundtrack. Franglen took on scoring duties for the Avatar franchise following Horner's death in a plane crash on June 2015. The soundtrack was released digitally on December 15, 2022.[1]
A score album featuring eleven additional score cues, Avatar: The Way of Water (Original Score), was released on December 20, 2022.[1]
Development[]
James Horner was originally billed to return to compose the sequel. When asked about his involvement with the ongoing franchise in April 2015, Horner stated that he would stay with it through its entire run "If I last that long".[2] However, Horner died in a plane crash in June 2015.[3] With the film still two years away from having a completed script, a new composer was needed - the post remaining unfilled as late as March 2019.[4] Simon Franglen, who had collaborated frequently with Horner in the past, was publicly announced as the new composer that December.[5] Franglen had already worked closely with Horner as electronic music arranger on the soundtrack for the first film.
After Horner's death, Franglen composed the music for Pandora: The World of Avatar. In late 2017, James Cameron asked Franglen to read the scripts for the sequels. The goal of starting the collaboration early was to develop the score in parallel to the film. Franglen designed unique Pandoran musical instruments for the film which the prop department brought into reality. The sea is an integral part to the themes and motifs of the score.[6]
Original Songs[]
"The Songcord" is a song in the Na'vi language. Neytiri sings it twice during the film. She thanks Eywa for the life of her kids, especially Neteyam's, and welcomes Kiri into the Sully family. The song was written by Simon Franglen and performed by Zoe Saldaña. It was nominated in the category "Song - Feature Film" at the Hollywood Music In Media Awards in 2022.[7] The full song was published on December 15, 2022, together with the full soundtrack of the film.[8]
The song "Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)" by "The Weeknd" plays during the end credits of the film.[9] It was first revealed on Twitter and Instagram on December 4th, 2022.[10][11] The song was released on December 15.[12] The song was produced by Swedish House Mafia and Simon Franglen.[13]
