Avatar is a multi-media franchise that debuted in 2009, although was envisioned in 1990s with an early script known as Project 880.

The Avatar franchise consists of a film series, video games, comic books, and even real-life shows and exhibitions. It is managed by Lightstorm Entertainment, and later on, Disney. The franchise is inspired by the mind of film director and artist James Cameron. The Avatar series has had many examples of cultural impact; for example, the first film highly influenced 3D media and became the highest-grossing film of all time.

The series is set in the mid-22nd century on Pandora, a lush habitable moon far away from Earth. The central conflict of the films is a violent war focused on the indigenous Na'vi led by Jake Sully and Neytiri, and humans led by Colonel Miles Quaritch from the Resources Development Administration (RDA), a megacorp which has arrived on Pandora to colonize and pillage it for its natural resources. The title of the series refers to the genetically engineered Na'vi body (avatars) operated from the brain that human's pilot to interact with on Pandora.

Most of the series is rated 13 and up due to its occasional violent content.
