Avatar 5 is one of four planned sequels to the 2009 film Avatar. It is set to be released on December 19, 2031.[1]

The film was unveiled on April 14th, 2016, along with a piece of artwork from the second film.[3]

Cameron has also stated that Avatar 5 will depend on how Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar: Fire and Ash fare financially. In January 2019, Disney CEO and chairman Bob Iger said that Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are being developed but haven't been officially greenlit by Disney.[4]

Plot[]

Avatar 5 takes place in the same timeframe as Avatar 4, specifically the same period after the movie's first third where there is a time jump.[5] It will conclude the overall storyline that began in Avatar: The Way of Water.[6]

It has been said that a major new threat will occur in Avatar 4 which will also encompass Avatar 5.

Director James Cameron has stated that Avatar 5 will include "action on Earth".[7] Jon Landau added that one of the main ideas of the film includes the Na'vi, specifically Neytiri, to "see" people on Earth.[8] Landau further elaborated that "we go to it to open people’s eyes, open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth." Neytiri will learn what is happening on Earth, that not all humans are bad and that Earth is not equivalent to the RDA.[9] He went on saying that Earth is not going to be shown as "totally bleak."[10] In February 2023, Cameron said the film will show an "earth decimated by climate change, but none of the movies will actually be set there." He wants to focus on saving a planet, not on destroying one.[11]

James Cameron has implied that both Jake and Neytiri will survive to Avatar 5, though whether or not they will live through its finale is unclear.[12] James Cameron has said that Miles Quaritch will be in all the sequels.[13]

Avatar 5 will have its own narrator, which will neither be Jake nor Lo'ak.[14]

Development[]

Title[]

A November 2018 BBC article claimed that the title would be Avatar: The Quest for Eywa.[23] Cameron later clarified in a February 2019 ET interview that the title was one of many under consideration and the sequel titles hadn't been finalized at that time.[24] Jon Landau stated in December 2022 that titles have been finalized but not to expect the previous claims to be final, saying that while The Way of Water was accurate, it does not mean the rest are.[25]

Writing[]

Shane Salerno is the primary writer for Avatar 5.[26]

James Cameron confirmed on January 30th, 2017 that the script for Avatar 5 was finished.[27] [28]

Production[]

An Avatar 5 was first teased on April 28, 2015, when James Horner mentioned that James Cameron had scripts for four sequels.

In September 2017, James Cameron stated that, as part of the back-to-back shooting of all four Avatar sequels, production on Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 would start after the release of Avatar 3. Both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are intended to be shot together and put through post-production sequentially, in a similar fashion to Avatar 2 and Avatar 3.[29]

In January 2024, Sam Worthington mentioned there would be more Avatar filming in February 2024. Sites have circulated that Worthington meant for Avatar 4, however, the original People.com article does not actually specify which film, or possibly both Avatar 3 and Avatar 4.[30] Because Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 were stated to be filmed together, it is unclear if Avatar 5 is intended here as well.

Delays[]

On May 7, 2019, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 were mentioned as part of Disney-Fox's theatrical release date, planned for December 19, 2025 and December 17, 2027, respectively.[31]

On July 23, 2020, James Cameron announced that all Avatar sequels are delayed by one year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.[32] The new release date for Avatar 5 was December 22, 2028.[33]

The sequels were delayed again by three years on June 13, 2023, with Avatar 4 being released on December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 being released on December 19, 2031.[1]

Trivia[]

  • After hearing Avatar 5 will be delayed from 2028 to 2031, Zoe Saldaña commented, "Great! I'm gonna be 53 when the last 'Avatar' comes out." I was 27 when I shot the very first 'Avatar.'"[34]
  • Avatar 5 is the first Hollywood movie to receive a 2030s release after the film's original date shifted from December 22, 2028 to December 19, 2031.
  • James Cameron mentioned he has plans for Avatar 6 and Avatar 7, but said, "Obviously, I’m not going to be able to make Avatar movies indefinitely, the amount of energy required. I would have to train somebody how to do this because, I don’t care how smart you are as a director, you don’t know how to do this."[35]
  • Stephen Lang said when he finished reading the script, "When I finished the last script, I was weeping. I just thought it was so beautiful."[36]
