Policies listed here are for usage in articles. Unless stated, they must be followed across the wiki, without exceptions.

Naming Articles[]

There are several rules to article names on Avatar Wiki.

  • Article names should have the first letter of every word capitalized, except for prepositions e.g. "of", "in".
  • Naming for character articles must not use the character's title e.g. "Jake Sully" not "Avatar Jake Sully", "Miles Quaritch" not "Colonel Miles Quaritch", "Parker Selfridge" not "Administrator Parker Selfridge".
  • Article names should be singular i.e. "Crossbow" not "Crossbows".
  • Always use the full name of the article's subject instead of abbreviations (e.g. Resources Development Administration instead of RDA). A redirect may be created for abbreviations where appropriate.

Perspective[]

Articles on Avatar Wiki are one of two types:

  • In-universe: Article should be written as if the Avatar world was the real world. For example, movies should not be referred to in a sentence. These articles include all character, location, flora and fauna, event etc. articles. Basically, any article without a real world article is an in-universe article.
  • Real world: Article should be written from "our" perspective. This includes all actor, staff, episode and film articles.

Usage and Spelling[]

Style and Language[]

Formal use of language is mandatory on all canon mainspace articles. Mainspace articles on Avatar Wiki aim to be as encyclopedic and authoritative as possible, and this is not possible without appropriate use of language. For example, "Jake's's awesome attacking skills" is not appropriate. "Jake's attacking skills are some of the most potent of any Na'vi in Pandora" is appropriate.

Spelling[]

American spelling is mandated on all canon mainspace articles on Avatar Wiki, on any template transcribed on articles, and on all official announcements. This is because Avatar is a movie produced by Americans, and the fact that all material about Avatar has been produced in the United States. Users' local spellings may however be used on any talk page or user page.

Tense[]

For real world articles, whatever tense guidelines apply on Wikipedia will apply here. However, there are some policies that must be noted for in-universe articles

  • Past tense must be used on any event articles. "The Na'vi defeated the RDA" is correct, whereas "The Na'vi defeats the RDA" is incorrect.
  • Present tense must be used on any location, creature and character page.

Other Notes[]

  • Quotes may be added to any page. However, Quote Boxes must not be added to planet pages. Quote boxes should only be used once in every article, at the top of the page. Quotes for battle pages should be the color of the instigator of the overarching conflict.
  • Translations of Na'vi of key terms can be added to articles, but only if the Na'vi being translated actually appeared in official material.
