Canyon Puffball Tree

The Canyon Puffball Tree is a variant of the Puffball Tree that grows in the Spires. Its pods slowly inflate with fermenting gas. Once full. the pods are released and float away. The Na'vi of the Spires have been using them as traps.

This larger variant of the puffball tree is only found in the Spires of the Clouded Forest region. After observing how puffball pollen interfered with engines of RDA helicopters, the Ke'awa Kame'tire started gathering ripe puffball seedpods and binding them together, fashioning a simple release mechanism to attack RDA aerial patrols.

The puffball tree is considered a keystone species on Pandora. It plays a critically important role in maintaining the stability of the environment. The globular balls produced at the tops of the trees and ends of the branches act as sponges, absorbing toxic gas from the atmosphere. This function is similar to that of the plant vacuole at the cellular level, which sequesters plant waste products and other molecules such as pigments and minerals.
