The Cloaked Panther (Na'vi name: vekreng) is a ferocious predator on Pandora.
Anatomy[]
Two cloaked panthers
It is characterized by a large wing-like membrane that extends from the front legs to the tail. Its streamlined and muscular body allows it to reach very high running speeds across grasslands. Once it has accelerated sufficiently, the membrane can deploy to allow it to glide short distances and descend upon its prey with silent, deadly precision.
The cloaked panther travels in packs of up to five and has very keen eyesight and hearing. They use stealth to close in on Arrow Deer herds before attacking together, hoping to separate vulnerable prey from the herd, which they then pursue and kill.
Na'vi Culture[]
The strong, flexible membranes on their wings are prized by the Na'vi, who use them as sturdy canopies for their shelters. Zeswa Clan tells the story of a warrior, not unlike the Earth myth of Icarus, who sewed a cloak of hooded panther wings and jumped off a cliff, hoping to fly like an ikran. It has become a popular warning for impetuous young people who tend to go further than they can.
