Flamingo Orchids (Na'vi name: Lortsyawll) are vibrant, eye-catching plants found in the rainforests of the Western Frontier. They have two large leaves that stretch out from an inner body like the wings of a bird — giving the planimal a larger profile that can intimidate smaller creatures.

The spineberry fruit grows at the base of the plant. However, it is protected by the flamingo orchid's unique defense mechanism. When approached, the plant detects movement via its complex mechanoreceptors which allow it to identify a distortion in the nearby air. When triggered, the flamingo orchid will turn its entire body towards the source of the disturbance in an impressive display.

Should the flamingo orchid feel threatened by the oncoming creature, it will fling colored seed pods from its stem in their direction. These seed pods propel through the air, deterring most creatures from coming closer. However, if this measure fails as a deterrent, the flamingo orchid's last line of defense is to curl itself up into a protective ball, wrapping its leaves around its stem.

Flamingo orchids are found throughout the Kinglor Forest. They favor the tops of large rocks, away from the forest floor. They can also be found across the floating mountains of the Clouded Forest.

Na'vi Culture[]

Some Na'vi have managed to navigate the various defensive mechanisms of this plant by creeping slowly and quietly without causing any disturbance. This approach allows them to take the spineberry fruit growing at the base of the plant. It is said that some Aranahe elders like to note this approach to the flamingo orchid when giving lessons on the virtue of patience.

Flamingo orchids appear as of the first deed of the Path of the Promiser. Hawnutu'un, and later So'lek, climbed a peak of the Hallelujah Mountains where flamingo orchids bloomed, and saw the forest below them.
