The Harpoon Cannon or sometimes known as the Harpoon Gun or Harpoon Launcher [1] is a type of harpoon launcher mainly used for hunting tulkun in Cetacean Operations, but can also be used as a makeshift weapon against other forms of life in Pandora.
Description[]
This whaling equipment is a giant harpoon launcher mounted on the bow of a Matador. It sits upon a swivel turret, offering a near 360 degree field of coverage.
The harpoon itself is a large, strong rod with an explosive rocket-assisted tip attached to a long cable of high-tensile composite materials that could withstand the pull and violent tussle with a tulkun.[1] The Cannon holds the harpoon with a massive amount of torque, and is able to release its potential energy with enough force to pierce through the thick hide of a tulkun whilst underwater.[2] Once embedded (usually on the tulkun's chest), the explosive tip would detonate, causing grievous internal wounds to the tulkun, resulting in death.[2]
The equipment boasts an in-built computer, camera and HUD screen for the operator to know the depth of the harpoon when fired, the amount of cable is left amongst other diagnostics.[2] The harpoon is able to be guided due to the aforementioned onboard computer, allowing the operator avoid the harpoon from being snagged by obstructive materials.[2]
Despite being largely used for non-military purposes, the Harpoon Cannon is just as capable of being used as a deadly weapon against enemy combatants. The Harpoon Cannon can reload through a mechanism located on the Matador's second deck which opens up to reveal more harpoons.[1]
