Created through failed RDA experiments on viperwolves, these unstable predators have lost their connection to Eywa.

Most commonly found near overgrown RDA facilities in the Heart of the Plains.

Behavior[]

The feral Viperwolf has been subjected to traumatic surgical alterations by the RDA. The most notable of these is the removal of their neural whips, leaving the creatures unable to connect with their surroundings and packmates in a natural way, likely resulting in their erratic behavior

Description[]

Traveling swiftly across the rainforest floor with its six legs and lean, powerful torso, the viperwolf covers long distances searching for its prey. With an awesome sense of smell, it is believed a viperwolf can sense its target from 5 miles away (8 km). Their keen, intelligent green eyes can see as clearly at night as in the day. When stalking prey, the viperwolf hugs the ground or clings to a tree branch with its primate-like paws. Unsuspecting prey are no match for a viperwolf's frighteningly efficient attacks.

Apart from apex predators like the mountain banshee or thanator, few creatures will attack a viperwolf, which usually live in packs up to a dozen. Highly cooperative and communicative, a pack of viperwolves can organize into a hunting party within seconds through a variety of barks, yelps, facial tics, and paw gestures.

Packs of viperwolves are fiercely territorial. Scent-marking, hunting, and defending their vulnerable — including expectant mothers and newborns cubs — are just a few ways viperwolves fend off incursions, especially by other rival viperwolf packs. A few months after birth, a viperwolf cub has to learn to hunt. Fortunately, cubs mature swiftly, growing to half adult size by six months. By then, they have a full set of black teeth and their jaw muscles are almost mature. A viperwolf's jaws can exert 9 lbs per sq in (0.6 kg per sq cm) of pressure, easily enough to crush bone.
