An Ikran Makto is a Na'vi individual who manages to ride an ikran, or Mountain Banshee. Becoming an Ikran Makto is a rite of passage all Omaticaya Clan members must pass to be accepted as one of The People. A Na'vi has only one chance to tame his Banshee; the struggle between the rider and mount culminates in Tsaheylu which, when shared between a Na'vi and an Ikran, is a lifelong bond.
The process of becoming an Ikran Makto includes the Na'vi being led up to a place in the Hallelujah Mountains where the largest breed of ikrans lives. Before they start their ascent on Iknimaya they paint a yellow V on their forehead. This is to resemble or symbolize a Na'vi device similar to goggles that they wear when riding their ikran to protect the eyes. [citation needed]
