Everything was backwards now like out there was the true world and in here was the dream.

Jake Sully (Born on August 24, 2126) [1] was the protagonist of Avatar. He was a paraplegic renegade Marine veteran who defected to the Na'vi race and he was also one of the 20 known avatar drivers. He was the sixth Toruk Makto and he was the Olo'eyktan of the Omaticaya clan.

After his twin brother named Tom was killed on Earth, Jake agreed to replace him in the Avatar Program on Pandora which the humans remotely controlled the human/Na'vi hybrids to safely navigate the planet. He was originally assigned to gather the intel that would help Colonel Quaritch find a way to force the Na'vi to leave Hometree or destroy it if it was necessary. The Na'vi's occupation of Hometree was blocking the RDA's access to a very large deposit of unobtanium that was underneath the tree. After spending time with the Na'vi, Jake abandoned his original mission and he stopped reporting to Quaritch. Jake learned the ways of the Na'vi hunters from Neytiri and he fell in love with her. He was eventually accepted into the Omaticaya clan and he became Neytiri's mate. He turned against the RDA and after becoming the sixth Toruk Makto, he led the Na'vi in a battle to drive the RDA off Pandora.

On Earth

Jake is reached by the RDA agents before taking him to the Municipal Crematorium

Jake Sully was born on August 24, 2126 and he was raised on Earth. He grew up hearing about Pandora which was a small moon that was orbiting the gas giant that was called Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri System. Though nothing was known about his childhood, he joined the Marines as an adult for the hardship that was involved and a cause to fight for. He suffered from a spinal injury in an unnamed war while he was fighting in Venezuela. The injury was severe, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.

Since his veteran benefits are not enough to pay for the surgery to repair his spine, he had no choice, but to live his life out in a wheelchair. After a night of drinking, Jake started a bar fight with a man who struck a woman. After breaking the fight up, the bouncers threw him out into the street where he was approached by the two RDA agents. They confirmed his identity and informed him that his identical twin brother named Tom was killed in a mugging. [2] His brother was one of the selected few scientists that was chosen to participate in the Avatar Program and one of the even fewer avatar "Drivers." Tom trained on Earth for three years in preparation for a tour on Pandora. He represented a significant investment on the part of the Resources Development Administration due to the inherent link between the pilot and the avatar that he controlled as well as the enormous cost of creating an avatar. Since Jake was genetically identical to his brother, he could link with the avatar, saving the company the cost of creating a new one. After being offered significant compensation, he apprehensively agreed to take over his brother's contract and he was putted in cryosleep for the trip to Pandora.

Arrival on Pandora

Isvjakewakes

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedJake wakes up from cryo on the ISV Venture Star

After five years, nine months and 22 days of travel, Jake woke up from cryosleep aboard the ISV Venture Star as it orbited above Pandora. Jake disembarked from a Valkyrie shuttle at Hell's Gate along with the other newcomers where he had his first contact with Pandora's hostile climate. Upon landing, Jake and the other passengers are briefed on the use of the exopacks: The personal rebreather units that filtered the toxic Pandoran atmosphere. The exopacks are required for survival outside the internally pressurized RDA facilities.

When he entered the RDA facility, Jake met Colonel Miles Quaritch who was a seasoned ex-military officer who was in charge of Pandora's entire paramilitary defense force. In a security briefing for the newcomers, he explained all of the dangers of Pandora to them by stressing that the biggest threat was an indigenous population of humanoids that are called the Na'vi. He made it clear that he was not willing to tolerate any resistance from the Na'vi and had very little patience for the scientists that are working on the avatar project.

The Avatar Program

Jake met Norm Spellman who was a biologist who arrived on the same rotation as he did and he was also a friend of his brother. Jake was introduced to Dr. Grace Augustine who was a botanist as well as the leader of the Avatar Program. The avatars are genetically engineered human/Na’vi hybrids which are controlled remotely by the avatar "Drivers". Using the avatars, Grace and her team made considerable progress in teaching some Na'vi how to use the English language as well as learning about the Na'vi's language and culture. However, Grace was not pleased with an RDA administrator named Parker Selfridge's decision to use Jake to replace his brother’s avatar position as she would have to spend time by training him in the Na’vi's culture and language as well as teaching him how to control his avatar. Quaritch saw this as a valuable opportunity and he decided to take advantage of Jake's military training by giving him the task of finding out all of what he could about the Na'vi by pretending to be in league with the avatar team and reporting his findings to the RDA. In return, Quaritch told Jake that if he succeeded, he would see to it that Jake got the surgery that he needed to regain the use of his legs.

Returning to the link room with Norm, Jake was prepped by Grace to link with his avatar for the first time. When Jake first entered his avatar, he began to move around by trying to get a feel for his avatar. Realizing that he finally had the use of his legs for the first time in years, he immediately got up and he started trying to walk much to the dismay and annoyance of the lab team. He was told to sit back down or he would be sedated, but he refused and he headed for the exit. He ran from the lab by enjoying his first chance to do so since being paralyzed. He ended up at the Avatar Compound where he met Dr. Grace Augustine's avatar. Grace was impressed by his motor reflexes which are far above the standards that are expected for a first time avatar driver.

First Contact With Pandora

Jake and Thanator

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedJake escaping from a thanator

Grace brought Norm and Jake (As security) on an expedition to retrieve the samples of the Pandoran flora. Trudy Chacon was their assigned pilot for the expedition along with Lyle Wainfleet who was serving as additional non-avatar security. Jake, Grace and Norm visited Grace's closed school. Upon seeing the bullet holes in a wall, Jake asked Grace what happened, but she changed the subject and the three continued on with the expedition. While Grace and Norm studied the wildlife, Jake wandered away and while he was playing around with the nearby flora, he stumbled across a group of hammerhead titanotheres which are a rhinoceros-like animal species. However, the titanotheres fled from a thanator which was a terrifying land predator. Jake ran for his life from the thanator by losing his equipment and weapon in the process. He narrowly escaped from death from the predator by leaping from the top of a cliff into a river below. After failing to locate Jake, the avatar team was forced to abandon the search for him as night operations are deemed to be too dangerous by Quaritch.

Woodsprites

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedSeeds of the Tree of Souls approach Jake

As Jake travelled through the forest of Pandora alone, Neytiri who was the princess of the Omaticaya clan discovered his presence and she prepared to kill him with her bow. However, just before she released her arrow, a woodsprite which was a pure spirit from the Tree of Souls landed on the tip of her arrow. Taking this as a sign from Eywa which was the godlike spirit of the forest and deity of the Na'vi, she eased her bow back and she letted Jake live. She continued to follow him until darkness fell. Jake created a torch by using a makeshift spear, his coat and sap from the trees. When he lit his torch, he discovered that he was surrounded by a pack of viperwolves. Jake fought until he was pinned by a viperwolf which Neytiri saved him by having to kill several viperwolves in Jake's defense. Jake tried to communicate with Neytiri as she spoke over the dead viperwolf, but she seemed to ignore him and she walked away. Jake pursued Neytiri and he tried to thank her for killing the viperwolves which angered Neytiri. She told him that the unnecessary killing of the creatures was not something to be grateful for. Jake asked Neytiri why she saved him. Her response was that Jake had a strong heart and he had no fear. Jake followed Neytiri, but she rejected him as he was one of the Sky People (The Na'vi's term for the humans) and he could not go with her. Suddenly, dozens of woodsprites appeared and landed on Jake's body. Neytiri who was amazed recognized the woodsprites' actions as a sign and she decided to take Jake to her village to allow Mo'at who was the Omaticaya clan's Tsahìk (Spiritual leader) to interpret the will of Eywa and decide what should be done with Jake.

Becoming one of "The People"

Jake's first hunting

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedJake hunting with a bow

When Jake and Neytiri arrived at Hometree which was the massive tree that the Omaticaya clan lived in, Jake met with Eytukan and Mo'at who are the leaders of the clan and parents of Neytiri. Jake also met with the finest warrior and leader of the Omaticaya clan's hunters named Tsu'tey who was betrothed to Neytiri and chosen to become the future clan leader one day. Jake presented himself as a warrior with the intention to learn from them. Tsu'tey insisted on killing Jake, but Eytukan wished to find out more about the warriors of the Sky People. Mo'at as the spiritual leader ordered Neytiri to teach Jake how to be one of the People. Reluctantly, Neytiri submitted to her mother's command and she taught Jake about the Na'vi's culture and language.

Back at Hell's Gate, Jake reported to Parker and Quaritch on the information about the natives. Quaritch seemed impressed and he claimed that he wished that he "Had ten more like you (Jake)". Grace became aware about their interest in Jake's information and arranged for the avatar team to be transferred to a remote camp in the floating Hallelujah Mountains in order to continue their program without military involvement. Jake knew that Grace disapproved of Quaritch and Parker's interference and that was why she moved the team. Jake continued to check in remotely with Quaritch over the next three months though the check ins became less and less frequent. It was during this time that Jake received instructions. He was taught how to speak the Na'vi's language. While he was learning how to ride Pale which was a direhorse, he failed tremendously with Tsu'tey and another hunter watching. He was taught how to walk and hunt silently. During this time, Jake's relationship with Grace also improved. Grace and Jake became friends and Grace came to the point of even putting Jake into his bunk after a late night video-log contribution and she forced Jake to eat even if he did not want to. Grace told Jake about the slaughter at her school where many young Na'vi are killed by the RDA soldiers including Neytiri's sister named Sylwanin and the pain that it brought her. Norm also tutored Jake in the Na'vi's language. Jake and Neytiri's relationship grew and an attraction between the two developed.

Jakes first flight experience

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedJake's first flight

Following a successful hunt which Jake made his first clean kill after stalking a hexapede and performing a ritual, Neytiri who was greatly impressed told Jake that he was ready to choose his own banshee (Ikran). Led by Tsu'tey, he and the other two Na'vi hunters undertook the ritual of Iknimaya and climbed the path to the banshee's nest. There, Jake learned how to bond with (Tsaheylu) and control his banshee much to the annoyance of Tsu'tey. Once Jake mastered his banshee, he joined Tsu'tey and the other young hunters along with Neytiri on several flights. He participated in a hunt for the sturmbeest and he elegantly killed one of them with his bow by proving himself as a "Stone, cold and aerial hunter". Later, he and Neytiri flew together and they are attacked by a great leonopteryx that was known to the Na'vi as toruk ("Last shadow") and they narrowly escaped. On that evening, Neytiri explained the significance of the toruk and she told him about her great-great-grandfather which was the mighty Toruk Makto (The Rider Of The Last Shadow). She talked about how he was the last of the only five Toruk Makto in the history of their tribe, how he delivered the People from the time of Great Sorrow and how much that she admired him.

At the end of the three months, Jake reported back to Quaritch as ordered. The Colonel informed Jake that his assignment was over and he was to be transferred immediately back to Earth to receive his promised surgery to restore the use of his legs. However, Jake was more concerned with the welfare of the Omaticaya and the welfare of Neytiri who he fell in love with than his desire to walk again. He was reluctant and wary about his fellow humans that are trying to exploit the moon’s resources. He convinced Quaritch to give him more time in order to convince the tribe to relocate peacefully. He told the Colonel that once he completed that night's ceremony, he would be made part of the People (An honor that was never granted to an avatar before) and they would trust him. On that night, Jake underwent the ceremony where Eytukan made him as one of their own and a part of the People with Grace and Neytiri looking on. Neytiri took Jake to one of the clan's most sacred places which was the Tree of Voices which was a holy place where he could connect to the trees and hear the voices of all of the spirits of the deceased Na'vi. Neytiri told Jake that now that he was one of the Omaticaya people, he could carve his bow from the wood of Hometree and he could choose a mate and suggested a few different Na'vi women. Jake told her that he chose her, but Neytiri must also choose him. She informed him that she already had and she became his mate. Once they are mated to each other, they are mated for life. After Jake returned to his human body, he realized the predicament that he putted himself in.

The Destruction of the Hometree

After spending the night with Jake, Neytiri was woken up by a huge bulldozer. She watched it destroy the Tree of Voices. Neytiri tried to wake Jake up, but he was in his human body preparing to enter his avatar. Neytiri dragged Jake's avatar body slowly while pleading with him to wake up. When Jake finally woke up, he tried to stop the bulldozer by standing in front of it. It stopped momentarily, but it started up again when Parker ordered the driver to keep going. When it started up again, Jake grabbed a rock, climbed to the top of the bulldozer and smashed the array of the cameras, disabling the vehicle and narrowly avoiding the gunfire from the patrols. Jake and Neytiri returned to the Hometree where Eytukan and Tsu'tey are preparing a war party to avenge the loss of the sacred trees. Jake was confronted by Tsu'tey when he realized that Jake and Neytiri mated. Tsu'tey attacked Jake in a fit of rage by attempting to kill him. Jake was able to subdue him and he was about to explain his original mission to the Omaticaya, but before he could, Jake and Grace's avatars collapsed when they are sent back to their human bodies by Quaritch who learned from the Hell Truck's video log that it was Jake who destroyed the cameras. Tsu'tey angrily reminded the clan that Jake was one of the Sky People, but Neytiri stopped him from killing Jake's avatar.

When they are brought back to Hell's Gate, Grace told an unbelieving Parker that the trees and plant life made a huge network up like the synapses of a human brain and the Na'vi could access all of the information within this network and the trees must not be destroyed. After some extensive persuasion, Jake and Grace are allowed by Parker to return to their avatars for one hour to try and get the Na'vi to evacuate. Jake and Grace begged the clan to leave because the Sky People are coming to destroy Hometree, but when Jake revealed his mission and he knew that the RDA would attack, the clan was outraged. Neytiri who was heartbroken by Jake's revelation furiously rejected him. Eytukan ordered them to be bound and he prepared the Omaticaya warriors for the defense of the Hometree. A large strike force that was led by Quaritch drove the Na'vi from their home with gas and incendiary rounds, consuming Hometree in flames. A desperate Mo'at released Jake and Grace from their bindings and she pleaded with them to save her tribe. As the Na'vi began to flee, Quaritch ordered his strike team to switch to high-explosive missiles and open fire on the roots of Hometree, causing it to collapse onto many of the fleeing Na'vi. Eytukan who was evacuating the Na'vi that are still inside the burning Hometree was impaled by a piece of wood that was sent flying by the rocket explosions. Neytiri found him and Eytukan gave her his bow by telling her to defend the clan before succumbing to his wounds. Jake found them and he tried to comfort Neytiri, but she rejected him again and she left with the surviving Omaticaya.

Torukmakto

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedJake after taming a toruk

While leaving the ruins of Hometree, Jake and Grace are forcefully returned to their real bodies and they are placed under arrest for treason along with Norm who assaulted one of the Marines who was trying to disable the link units. Trudy and Dr. Max Patel rescued the avatar team from prison. Before they got outside, Jake asked Dr. Patel to stay behind and be his man on the inside. Trudy hijacked her Samson and she flew them to safety, but not before being fired upon by Quaritch. He failed in stopping the avatar team from escaping, but he shot Grace in the stomach. The team flew the camp container that was holding the avatar link units from Site 26 into hiding near the Tree of Souls where the remaining Omaticaya fled to safety.

Jake returned to his avatar form at the ruins of Hometree. His banshee found him amidst the ashes and Jake decided that the only way to regain the trust of the Na'vi and save Grace was to "Take it to a whole new level". They flew at high altitude until they found the great leonopteryx which Jake leaped from his ikran onto the back of the leonopteryx and he bonded with it by becoming the sixth Toruk Makto. After bonding with the creature, he persuaded it to form a temporary partnership with him to save Pandora. They confronted an RDA soldier in a Scorpion Gunship before heading out to find the Omaticaya clan.[3] To the initial panic and astonishment of the Na'vi, he landed at the Tree of Souls where the amazed Omaticaya people including Tsu'tey recognized him as Toruk Makto. When Neytiri saw him, she knew who Jake sided with and she was grateful to see him return. Jake reaffirmed his love for her and said, "I See You" which was a Na'vi greeting. After earning the respect of Tsu'tey who was the clan leader who agreed to help him stop the Sky People, Jake made a plea to Mo’at to save Grace from dying. The Na'vi attempted to place Grace's spirit within her avatar body permanently, but her wounds are too great and she passed away. Before she passed away, she told Jake that she could see Eywa and she was with her.

The Final Battle

Jake gathers the clans

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedJake gathers all the Na'vi clans

Having earned the tribe's trust back, Jake asked for Tsu'tey's permission to speak and it would honor him if he could translate his words to the Na'vi. Jake encouraged them to fight back against the Sky People.

He rallied the Omaticaya clan and they rode with him as he flew out to gather all of the tribes for a final attack just as the previous Toruk Makto did. Jake made tsaheylu with the Tree of Souls and he asked Eywa to look into Grace's memories and see how the humans destroyed Earth and intervene to keep them from destroying Pandora as well. Neytiri overheard him and she told him that Eywa did not take sides. She only maintained the balance of life on Pandora.

Surveying the Na'vi with satellites, Quaritch learned that the other clans converged with the Omaticaya at the Tree of Souls and he decided to destroy them and their holy ground to put an end to their defiance once and for all. A huge military fleet that was commandeered by Quaritch approached the Tree of Souls by using the Valkyrie shuttle as a makeshift bomber and mining explosives as "Daisy cutter" munitions to destroy the tree. Thousands of Na'vi warriors that are led by Jake and Tsu'tey took to the skies and attacked the fleet while Norm rode with the cavalry on the ground. The Na'vi forces on the ground are easily defeated by the human infantry and their powerful AMP suits and they suffered from heavy losses including Norm whose avatar was shot. In the skies, a massive air battle ensued between the human air fleet and the Na'vi hunters that are riding the banshees. The Na'vi inflicted some casualties on the humans with their initial strike by managing to take several human gunships down. However, the humans' superior firepower saw them inflict heavier casualties on the Na'vi and they looked to resume their bombing run.

Quaritch who was flying in his Dragon Gunship noticed Jake's toruk and gave chase. Before Quaritch managed to shoot Jake down, Trudy dove in with her Samson and she strafed the Dragon. An enraged Quaritch turned his attention to her which allowed Jake to escape. Trudy valiantly fought back, but her Samson was no match for Quaritch's gunship and she was shot down and she was killed. Tsu'tey boarded the Valkyrie in the hopes of preventing it from dropping it's payload, but after killing or incapacitating several humans that are inside the Valkyrie's cargo bay, he was gunned down by a human soldier and he fell from the shuttle. Jake called Tsu'tey and Trudy, but they did not answer. He made contact with Neytiri whose ikran was dead was getting ready to attack the RDA ground forces single-handedly. Jake pleaded with her over the communications collar not to, but before she tried, a stampede of hammerhead titanotheres attacked the RDA ground forces by trampling the infantry and smashing the AMP suits and followed by the viperwolves which attacked the infantry more accurately. Neytiri was further surprised when one of Pandora's deadliest creatures which was a thanator allowed her to make tsaheylu with it and ride it. The human ground forces broke and retreated in panic. In the skies, the swarms of wild ikran descended on the surviving RDA gunships by pulling the craft off balance and ripping the door gunners out of their stations until only the Valkyrie and Quaritch's Dragon Gunship remained.

The Valkyrie that was approaching the Tree of Souls prepared to drop it's payload, but in the ensuing confusion that was created by the wild ikran attack, Jake leaped onto the Valkyrie by throwing a grenade into one of it's engines before it could drop it's payload of mining explosives. The grenade detonated by causing the Valkyrie to collide with a nearby rock by shearing the left wing off and sending it into a steep dive. The pilots are unable to compensate for the lost of thrust and the ship crashed into the ground and exploded. With all of the RDA ships except Quaritch's destroyed or in retreat, Jake attempted to destroy the Dragon Gunship in the same way that he destroyed the Valkyrie. Quaritch who was seeing Jake land on the gunship before he managed to throw his two grenades turned the ship sharply to the starboard by nearly throwing Jake off. One grenade was lodged in a small air vent and detonated by ripping a hole in the Dragon's armor by resulting in a few hydraulic-based control failures and exposed the interior crew to the Pandoran atmosphere. The falling Jake managed to grab onto one of the Dragon's missile racks. Jake pulled a missile off the rack and heaved it into the rotor blades of the Dragon's front starboard engine. The resulting explosion destroyed the engine and sent the Dragon into an uncontrollable spin. Jake fell from the ship and landed safely in the jungle by breaking his fall with the huge leaves on the trees. Quaritch also escaped from his gunship by manning his personal AMP suit and jumping from the ship's cargo bay and he was fully intent on making a one-man assault on the Tree of Souls.

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedThe final battle between Jake and Quaritch

Stumbling upon the camp that was containing the avatar link units by chance, Quaritch attempted to destroy Jake's human body, but before he could do so, Neytiri and her thanator attacked him by successfully destroying the GAU-90 cannon that was for Quaritch's AMP suit. However, Quaritch overpowered and killed the thanator with his AMP suit knife. As he prepared to kill Neytiri who was pinned under the thanator's body, Jake arrived to challenge him. The two fought fiercely in close quarters. Jake used the rifle bayonet for the GAU-90 to fend the blows of Quaritch's AMP suit off. Jake managed to break the AMP suit knife and destroyed the AMP's glass canopy, but Quaritch putted an exopack on. The Colonel taunted Jake by asking him how it felt to betray his own race before turning and attacking the avatar link unit with the suit. Jake managed to fend Quaritch off before he could fully break the camp open, but a window was broken which allowed the Pandoran air into the link units. With his human body struggling, Jake was easy prey for Quaritch who was preparing to slit Jake's throat with his own knife when Neytiri killed Quaritch with two shots from her father's bow. She tried to wake Jake's avatar up to no avail while Jake struggled inside the link unit to grab an emergency rebreather. Finally remembering that he was a human, she rushed into the link unit and she placed an exopack on Jake's now-unconscious human body by saving him again. As Jake woke up, he said "I See You" to Neytiri and he gently stroked her cheek. Neytiri repeated it back to him. The greeting took a new meaning on as she was seeing and she was talking to Jake's human body for the first time. After reconnecting to his avatar, Jake and Neytiri are brought to Tsu'tey who was mortally wounded by a group of surviving Na'vi warriors. Tsu'tey passed his leadership of the Omaticaya clan on to Jake and requested that he should end his suffering. Jake was reluctant, but he was assured by Tsu'tey that he would be remembered as Toruk Makto would be his last shadow and he honored Jake by calling him a brother. Jake remorsefully euthanized Tsu'tey and recited a prayer for him.

New Life As A Na'vi

Jake stays on Pandora forever

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedMo'at performing the ritual

Having putted the RDA's occupation of Pandora to an end, Jake made his last log entry on August 24, 2154 by explaining that the humans are sent back to Earth by the Na'vi except for a few (The scientists of the Avatar Program) and he decided to stay in his avatar form permanently. Returning to the Tree of Souls, he underwent the consciousness transfer from his human body to his avatar body and he woke up to a new life as a Na'vi by marking August 24 as his "Birthday" which was the day where he truly became a Na'vi and a part of the People. At this point, Jake's avatar opened it's eyes after the transfer by proving that it succeeded.

Personality and traits

Jake had a good heart although his Marine attitude got in the way of that. At first, he seemed callous and sarcastically indifferent, but as he became familiar with someone, he began to trust and respect them. He was courageous, determined, passionate and possessed an exceptional strength of a character. In his own words, "I could pass any test that a man could pass". He also proved that he could pass any test that a Na'vi could pass by being one of the few to bond with a great leonopteryx and the only avatar to ever accomplish the feat. Despite being a human, he fell in love with the Na'vi princess named Neytiri.

Initially, Jake had very little knowledge on Pandora or it's inhabitants. However, he was a fast learner and he quickly adapted to the Na'vi's way of life by becoming a member of the Omaticaya clan in only three months. Though he noted that with Neytiri, it was "Learn fast or die", he relished the challenges that she provided him with and refused to give up on them no matter how hard that they are.

Over time, Jake began to care about nature, the Na'vi's way of life and the Omaticaya people. When Eytukan was killed during the RDA's assault on Hometree, Jake was saddened and he tried to comfort Neytiri despite the fact that he was rejected as a traitor. When Grace was shot by Quaritch during the avatar team's escape from Hell's Gate, Jake did everything that he could to ensure that she did not die. However, when Grace succumbed to her wounds and she died, Jake felt pain and sorrow, but he used these emotions to solidify his determination to stop the RDA. He also prevented Quaritch from killing Neytiri during the final battle and he fought against the Colonel despite the fact that Quaritch was in an AMP suit at the time.

The Omaticaya's trust for Jake was shattered when they learned about his initial mission. Jake regained their trust by risking his life to tame a toruk. He displayed his leadership skills and charisma when he united the Na'vi clans and he led them into battle against the RDA. However, when Tsu'tey was gravely wounded in the final battle and he wished for Jake to take the title of Olo'eyktan, Jake was hesitant to accept as he was feeling that he was not "Officer material" and he was unwilling to kill Tsu'tey despite his urging of Jake to end his pain. Jake did so with much sadness and he wished his spirit to go with Eywa.

Abilities

Jake was a skilled and resourceful warrior who adapted to his environment by owing to his former occupation as a Recon Marine. He was agile and he quickly became acute to the bow and arrow. His skills are best displayed during his fight with Colonel Quaritch where he took an AMP suit GAU-90 bayonet and he used it against him. Jake appeared to be a skilled hand-to-hand combatant: In his human body, he managed to physically beat a bullying bar patron despite his spinal cord injury and in his avatar body, he used his skills as a Marine to catch Tsu'tey off guard when he tried to kill him in a blind rage. His resourcefulness was displayed when he successfully destroyed the Valkyrie shuttle by throwing a grenade into one of it's engines and the Dragon Assault Ship via a grenade and a detached missile during the Assault on the Tree of Souls.

Jake also quickly adapted to flying an ikran. While hunting the sturmbeest from the back of his ikran, he succeeded in killing one of the creatures. He managed to escape from a toruk along with Neytiri on their respective ikrans by guiding Neytiri to safety in the process. Later, Jake rode a toruk skillfully during the final battle with the RDA. Despite his flying skills, Jake was not very good at riding the direhorses and he kept falling off them.

Relationships

Neytiri

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedNeytiri seeing Jake in his human body for the first time

Neytiri was the Na'vi princess that Jake fell in love with on the moon that was called Pandora. Jake first met Neytiri when she saved him from a pack of viperwolves. At the time, she was angry with him since the viperwolves would not have to die if Jake was more careful and quiet. In the weeks following Mo'at's assignment to Neytiri to teach him about the Na'vi's culture and language, their relationship improved. During their lessons, Jake and Neytiri grew close to one another and they began to fall in love. After Jake successfully tamed his own ikran and he was accepted into the clan, Neytiri took Jake to the Tree of Voices where they chose each other as their mates for life.

Neytiri ferociously defended her mate when Tsu'tey tried to kill Jake's avatar after he was disconnected while he was attempting to reveal his true mission to the clan. When Jake eventually did so after he returned to his avatar body, Neytiri was distraught and horrified by the revelation and she rejected him. When Hometree was destroyed, Neytiri was devastated because of her father's death. When Jake found a grieving Neytiri and he tried to comfort her, she angrily told him to never return. However, he won her back after proving his loyalties by becoming the sixth Toruk Makto. She supported him in gathering the clans and she fought under his command against the RDA forces.

Jake loved Neytiri very deeply and he was willing to put himself in perilous situations for her if he had to. This was proven when he saved Neytiri from Colonel Quaritch as he was about to kill her which would have cost him his life if Neytiri had not intervened at the last moment. Neytiri saved Jake's life three times in the final battle against the RDA forces. The first time, she attacked Quaritch when he was about to destroy the module that was containing Jake's human body. The second time, she saved Jake's avatar from Quaritch's AMP suit by killing the Colonel. The third time, she placed an exopack on his human body after the module was deliberately breached by Quaritch. After Jake regained consciousness, he said to Neytiri, "I See You" which was the traditional Na'vi's greeting by meaning, "I saw who you truly are". Neytiri said it back to him and she began to shed the tears of joy. These words marked the true depth of their relationship due to Jake being in a human form. Neytiri watched over Jake's human and avatar bodies as he went through the consciousness transfer up until the point where he woke up to his new life as a Na'vi.

Grace Augustine

Grace - "Catch"

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedJake meets Grace's avatar

At first, Grace took Jake's role in the Avatar Program as an insult since she needed his brother, "The PhD who trained three years for this mission." and referring to Jake as a "Jarhead dropout". After arguing with Selfridge, she reluctantly agreed to take him on as a security escort. When Jake was taken in by the Omaticaya clan, she made sure that Jake had the best equipment and support so nothing went wrong during his time with the Na'vi. She took Jake, Norm and Trudy to an isolated avatar uplink site in the Hallelujah Mountains to keep Jake from reporting his findings to Colonel Quaritch. Over time, she began to treat Jake like the son that she never had by putting him to bed when he fell asleep during a video log. Jake felt a mutual feeling toward Grace as he convinced Mo'at to allow Grace back into the tribe.

When Jake was finally accepted as one of the People and a true Na'vi, Grace looked on in her avatar with pride. She was with Jake when he was trying to convince the Omaticaya that they had to leave Hometree or the RDA would kill them. She escaped from imprisonment by the RDA with Jake, but she was wounded by Quaritch. When the Na'vi tried to transfer her consciousness into her avatar, she told Jake that she was with Eywa. However, the transfer was unsuccessful as she succumbed to her wounds and she passed away. When she died, Jake became extremely upset and her death inspired the campaign of retribution against the Sky People. While he was praying, Jake asked Eywa to look into Grace's memories to see how the Sky People treated their planet. It was unknown if Eywa did so, but she seemed to react by having the wild animals on Pandora join the final battle.

Miles Quaritch

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedQuaritch making the deal with Jake

Jake originally saw Quaritch as an ally when he first arrived on Pandora. He was a foil to Dr. Augustine in Jake's relationships. In exchange for the promise of neuroregeneration surgery that would return the use of his legs, Jake agreed to acquire the military intelligence for the Colonel in case military action against the Na'vi should be necessary. Quaritch also seemed to be fond about Jake by saying that "I wished that I had ten more like you". However, as he became closer to Neytiri and the Na'vi, he broke his ties with Quaritch. In the final battle, Quaritch tried to kill Jake. Shortly before doing so, he was stopped when Neytiri killed Quaritch with her father's bow, saving Jake's life.

Norm Spellman

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedNorm and Jake as they commence their first mission on Pandora

Jake first met Norm on Pandora after the meeting with Colonel Quaritch. He told Jake that he knew Jake's brother and they would be working together for the next six years. Norm knew a lot about the Na'vi's language which he learned while training for the Avatar Program back on Earth and even had a short conversation with Dr. Grace Augustine in Na'vi. Norm rode with the Na'vi cavalry in the final battle against the RDA. Norm was initially jealous about Jake and he grew bitter around him as he trained for five years and Jake had no training and he was accepted into the Omaticaya clan. He came around when they began working together and he took it upon himself to go significantly out of his way to help the avatar team. This was best exemplified when Norm attacked a Marine who was trying to bring Jake and Grace out of the link units after the destruction of the Hometree out of his usual non-threatening nature. Norm fought alongside Jake in the final battle and he was one of the few humans that was allowed to remain on Pandora.

Tsu'tey

I will fly with you HD

3D Version: red/cyancross-eyedJake encountering Tsu'tey after becoming Toruk Makto

Jake's relationship with Tsu'tey was never easy. When they first met, Tsu'tey wanted to kill Jake for being one of the Sky People. Their rivalry grew after Jake and Neytiri began to fall in love with one another despite the fact that Tsu'tey and Neytiri are betrothed to mate and rule the Omaticaya clan together. When Jake and Neytiri eventually mated, her parents showed disappointment while Tsu'tey was enraged and he tried to kill Jake. When Jake revealed his mission to the clan, Tsu'tey and his warriors binded Jake and Grace for his betrayal. However, when Jake became the sixth Toruk Makto and pledged his allegiance to the Omaticaya people, Tsu'tey letted go of his grudge against Jake and he came to respect him. Tsu'tey and Jake fought side by side in the final battle. Tsu'tey was fatally wounded in the battle. After the Na'vi defeated the RDA forces, Jake found a dying Tsu'tey who admitted that he was proud to fight with Jake and he considered him a brother. With great reluctance, Jake granted Tsu'tey a merciful death at his request.

Mo'at

Mo'at was the reason why Jake was accepted into the Omaticaya clan. She was curious about him because he was the first warrior to go into an avatar body. Mo'at encouraged Jake's learning about the Na'vi's culture and allowed Grace into the village at his request because of his progress. She was initially displeased that Jake and Neytiri mated, but she came to feel better about it. When the RDA attacked Hometree, Mo'at freed Jake and Grace from their bonds and she begged them to save the clan. When Jake became Toruk Makto, she was amazed and she realized that he was a good mating choice for Neytiri. Mo'at also performed the ritual that allowed Jake to be permanently transferred into his avatar body.

Parker Selfridge

Jake originally saw Parker as a boss who he could trust and Parker viewed him as a capable asset. However, as Jake began to trust Grace Augustine and get closer to the Na'vi, he broke his ties with Parker by viewing him as a cold and greedy businessman. Even when this occurred, Jake saw Parker as someone who could be negotiated out of predicaments. This was best seen when Jake convinced Parker to let him and Grace go back into their avatar bodies to try to evacuate the Na'vi. Parker was among the humans who Jake and the Na'vi exiled from Pandora.

Trudy Chacon

Jake saw Trudy as an ally and a good friend and another former Marine who was looking for a new lease on life. She was the pilot who brought Jake and the avatar team to the Hallelujah Mountains to separate themselves from the main RDA facility. She was a pilot at the attack on the Hometree, but she could not bring herself to fire and returned to the base. With the assistance from Max Patel, she freed Jake, Norm and Grace from RDA captivity and helped them relocate the camp in the Hallelujah Mountains to a site near the Tree of Souls. She flew her Samson that was adorned with war paint in the final battle with the RDA under the callsign "Rogue 1". She distracted Quaritch's Dragon Assault Ship away from Jake and she managed to damage the Dragon before being disabled and ultimately killed by Quaritch.

Max Patel

Max was one of the few humans on Pandora that Jake truly trusted. Max was the scientist who told Grace about Quaritch's intentions for Jake, causing the team to move to different locations. Over time, Max became Jake's friend. Max helped Jake, Norm and Grace escape from Hell's Gate along with Trudy. He was appointed as Jake's inside man. After the final battle, Max was one of the few humans that was allowed to stay on Pandora.

Eytukan

Jake seemed to respect Eytukan who conducted his initiation ceremony into the clan and he seemed honored to accept Jake as one of the Omaticaya people. Eytukan also seemed to return Jake's respect and listened attentively when Jake tried to warn the Na'vi that the RDA was planning to destroy Hometree, but when Jake was thought to be a traitor after revealing his mission, Eytukan who was infuriated ordered Jake and Grace to be bound as he and the clan's warriors prepared to defend Hometree against the RDA. When Eytukan died in the assault, Jake was sad and he tried to comfort Neytiri only to be rejected by her until he proved where his loyalties laid upon taming a toruk.

Tom Sully

Jake's relationship with his brother was unknown and when Jake saw Tom's recently deceased body, he appeared to be disturbed, but he showed little emotion. Jake took Tom's place as an avatar driver on Pandora. When Grace told Jake that she needed his brother upon their first meeting, Jake bluntly replied that he was dead and referred to his death as a "Big inconvenience". Whenever Jake spoke about Tom, he would refer to him as "Tommy" even after his brother died.

Jake described the two of them as having the same appearance, but much different personalities with Jake being more outgoing and Tom being more studious. One thing that they both bonded over was a book that Tom had about the myths and legends and about the heroic figures on Earth with Jake's favorite part of the book was a tale about Alexander the Great.[4]
