James Cameron's Avatar is an upcoming line of comic books and graphic novels based on the Avatar franchise, published by Dark Horse Comics. It was unveiled at the 2015 New York Comic Con by James Cameron, in a video message. Dark Horse is now part of an associated ten year partnership deal. The comics will be set "before, during and after" the events of the first film.[1]

The Free Comic Book Day 2017 issue was announced on December 12, 2016 and released on May 6, 2017. The full rollout of the Avatar comics line was originally planned for late 2017.[2] On February 2, 2018, Dark Horse tweeted "more James Cameron's Avatar is planned for later this year...Will announce details when we can."[3]

On September 27, 2018, Dark Horse announced Avatar: Tsu'tey's Path, a six-issue miniseries, with the first issue's release date set for January 16, 2019.[4] The second issue's release date is February 13, 2019.[5]

Free Comic Book Day 2017Edit

The FCBD 2017 issue, released as a special edition tie-in to the annual Free Comic Book Day event held at comics retailers, was written by Sherri L. Smith, illustrated by Doug Wheatley, and colored by Wes Dzioba. The cover art was done by Dave Wilkins.[6] The lettering was done by Michael Heisler.[7] The full issue is available to read online for free with a Dark Horse Digital account.

The issue focuses on Jake Sully's bond with the Great Leonopteryx, strengthening it through his memories of his brother and the stories he shared about great historical & mythical partnerships. The story is set during the events of the first film as a "comic book exclusive scene" with Jake preparing for the final battle in the Pandoran War, showing what happened between him jumping onto the Great Leonopteryx and him arriving at the Tree of Souls. The issue also features a preview of another Dark Horse published comic, Briggs Land, written by Brian Wood and illustrated by Werther Dell'Edera.[2]

Mashable previewed the finalized cover and first two pages of the FCBD 2017 issue on January 31st, 2017. The cover is mostly unchanged from the original art previewed, with the exception of the likeness on it changed to Jake in his battle gear during the Assault on the Tree of Souls.[8]

Avatar: Tsu'tey's PathEdit

Avatar: Tsu'tey's Path is a six issue comic miniseries focusing on Tsu'tey. Much like the FCBD issue, the miniseries takes place during the events of the first film and features events that were only alluded to in the original movie. The miniseries will be written by Sherri L. Smith, penciled by Jan Duursema, inked by Dan Parsons, and colored by Wes Dzioba. The covers will be done by Doug Wheatley, with variant covers by Shea Standefer[9][10][11].
