Kaleidoscope Butterflies (Na'vi name: Nrrtsyal) are predominantly found in caves and dark places across the Western Frontier, Kaleidoscope Butterflies are known for their distinctive, eye-catching bioluminescent wings. These wings have the remarkable ability to adapt in appearance to the biome they inhabit. As such, Kaleidoscope Butterflies have alternate appearances across the different regions.
This vibrance means they are frequently prey to larger predators. As a result, it is believed that they favor caves in part to limit their encounters with these predators.
A tale in Na'vi folklore tells of a young child who left her clan, hoping to explore the caves of nearby mountains alone. Naïve, and without the support of her people, she found herself lost in a labyrinth of subterranean tunnels. However, as hope was fading, a small flock of Kaleidoscope Butterflies found her, and illuminated a trail back to the surface. When she was older, she returned to the caves with many of her clan. They would visit the Kaleidoscope Butterflies together and sing to them in thanks for guiding one of their own home. Though the song has been lost with time, it is said that the Kaleidoscope Butterflies loved its melody so much that they would dance around the Na'vi.
