A Moonscarab (Na'vi name: kxemì'ang) is an insect with moon shaped wings.
A monster-sized insect by Earth standards, the moonscarab's wingspan is larger than any human adult. However, the moonscarab is more imposing than it is dangerous.
The wings of the moonscarab are particularly large for an insect of this size. Thin and fragile, they present an impressive, fan-shaped surface when unfurled. Their size and specific motion provides the right lift and stability, allowing the moonscarab to fly holding its immense body vertically. This peculiar pose makes it appear as if it is standing in the air.
The rapid flutter of moonscarab wings produced a loud, incessant droning. Due to this, the Aranahe enjoy poking lighthearted fun at noisy friends by comparing them to moonscarabs. Similarly, Zeswa hunters love to make up new - often absurd - moonscarab-themed monikers for those who are not particularly subtle on a hunt.
Solitary by nature, moonscarabs never form swarms. However, there have been a few observed cases of lone females adopting orphaned moonscarab children. Thus, despite their distinctive appearance and inability to protect themselves from predators, moonscarab populations thrive on Pandora thanks to their caution and instinctual care for their young.
