In 2138, Nor was kidnapped from the Sarentu clan by John Mercer and Angela Harding when he was a child and forced to participate in TAP. Being a little older than the other students, he was more rebellious and would challenge the authority of Mercer, Harding and Alma Cortez. He criticized Teylan, who was the only one who believed Mercer's false stories, to the point that he and his friend got into a fight. He was noted in his school record to be surly and having potential with weapons, but he displayed reluctance and anger to using them. Alma believed Nor needed care instead of harsher discipline and punishments.[1]
Alma encourages Nor to enter cryosleep in 2154
In 2146, at the instigation of Aha'ri, they attempted to escape but Mercer stopped the kids and killed Aha'ri. Aha'ri was Nor's closest friend which made him harbor deep anger at the RDA and mistrust of any human.
In 2154, after the Battle of Ayram Alusìng, Mercer ordered the children executed. Alma saved them and then put the children into hibernation. Fifteen years later, Nor and the rest of the group woke up and were taken into the care of the Resistance.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora[]
He becomes fast friends with So'lek during his time with the Resistance, and is noted for being happier when he gets to explore Pandora, but does not enjoy his time being around humans at Resistance HQ.
Nor confronting Alma about her passivity with Mercer's abuse.
During the joint celebration of the Resistance and the Zeswa clan after the destruction of the mining facility, Alma asked the Sarentu to talk to her privately. Alma expressed her pride in what both of them had become, but a moment later Nor joined the conversation, glad he has a memento of their clan back. When Alma said, "It is back with us", her usage of "us" offends Nor, saying the two of them are not the same. Nor began to accuse Alma of never standing up for the children whenever they were victims of physical or psychological abuse by Mercer and Harding. Suddenly, headquarters was bombed by the RDA. Nor and everyone else relocated to the Clouded Forest.
Nor fatally stabs Alma's avatar
After the Sarentu discovers the truth of the Kame'tire clan, Nor becomes so enraged and disgusted by Alma's lies-of-omission, and her covering of her involvement with destroying the Sarentu clan that he fatally stabs her avatar to death. When even So'lek says Nor should not have done that, Nor leaves out of frustration and is never seen again, and his whereabouts are unknown. Priya Chen gives her on thoughts about Nor's actions, commenting, "I know she did some bad things, but Nor had no right. I'm glad he's gone. Maybe he's glad too. He never liked it here. Never liked us. Humans." His biography mentions he feels betrayed by everyone, especially when his other Sarentu friends and So'lek did not approve of him killing Alma's avatar, and that he left the Resistance.
At the end of the Secrets of the Spires DLC, the remaining Sarentu members including Rasi decide to go on a mission to find Nor and invite him to be one with their clan again.
Personality[]
Alma once described Nor as being a moody teenager. His ongoing rebellion is partially due to believing it is what Aha'ri would have wanted, but it is also a manifestation of his hurt and confusion. Nor holds a lot of resentment and anger towards Alma for her inaction towards him and his friends when he was growing up, as she acted passively towards them being abused by John Mercer and Angela Harding. As a result, he makes passive-aggressive comments at her.[2]
He struggles to find a place on Pandora, especially among the human Resistance. However, he has struggles integrating with Na'vi ways, and perhaps suffers from a bit of Imposter Syndrome. He tries to tolerate the Resistance and their drive to make things better, but he ultimately feels deep down that it would be better if all the humans left. His distrust of humans amplifies when he discovers Harding's black market, as well as discovering Alma's role in the destruction of the Sarentu clan.
In a memo, Teylan mentions Nor does not enjoy connecting to Eywa, although it is never explicitly explained why this is. It is heavily implied, however, that it is because reliving the traumatic memories of his childhood disturbs him. Additionally, he states that he is ashamed of being raised at TAP and perceives himself as 'different' than other Na'vi, to the point of harboring a fear that his ancestors will notice that difference.
Notable Quotes[]
„And you worked with him.“- when Alma mentions Mercer is self-serving and egotistical
„You decide what that is. What we want. What we need. We didn't need protecting when we were with our clan! Where was your protection when Harding forced me to hold a gun and broke my fingers around the grip? Or when Mercer had Teylan beaten for wetting the bed? The bruises took weeks to heal. And when they took Aha'ri away... I... we never saw her again! You didn't do a thing to stop Mercer. The wounds he gave us, you gave as well.“- Nor confronting Alma Cortez
„Wish people would stop asking me that.“- when asked how he is doing
