3D Version: Direhorse riders in battle
Pa'liyä Maktoyu (English: direhorse rider)[1] is a term for a Na'vi that has successfully tamed and ridden a direhorse. A bond with a direhorse is not life-long, and therefore one direhorse can be ridden by many different riders.
Learning to ride a direhorse is a minor rite of passage for the Omatikaya clan to prepare young hunters for Iknimaya, or the taming of a banshee. The Olangi clan, one of the horse clans of the plains, is comprised largely of pa'liyä maktoyu, who make great use of the animal's mobility to trek across Pandora and follow migration paths.
During the Assault on the Tree of Souls, the Olangi clan pa'liyä maktoyu served as a cavalry challenging the Resources Development Administration's ground infantry. Despite their large numbers, they were ineffective against the RDA's powerful weaponry and were forced into retreat.
