Pandoran Flora the plant world of Pandora.
Pandora's vegetation is unusual, even fantastic. Some species, such as the cycad, beanstalk palm or warbonnet fern, bear a striking resemblance to terrestrial ones, but the geode, vein pod or baja tickler are unlikely to have such analogues. The variety of shapes and sizes of plants, the complexity of their structure suggests that here, as on Earth, nature itself is the driving force of natural selection.
Environmental factors that affect plants on Earth (radiation, water, atmospheric gases, gravity) also act on Pandora, although their characteristics are somewhat different, which naturally affects the flora. All these factors influenced the evolution of the local flora. For example, Pandoran plants, like terrestrial plants, are affected by gravity, but in Pandora it is much less and as a result, the stems do not always grow upward and the roots downward. Furthermore, gigantism is widespread. Under the influence of a magnetic field and ionizing radiation, plants have developed certain reactions; magnetotropism and radiotropism, and some representatives of the flora have the ability to magnetonasty, that is, they move in accordance with the magnetic field. Compared to these phenomena, the most typical reaction, thigmotropism, which is found on both Earth and Pandora, seems to be a common phenomenon.
Studying the local flora is an invaluable experience that the few scientists lucky enough to make it to Pandora are lucky to obtain.
Common Features[]
Despite the great diversity of Pandora's flora, it is possible to identify certain common traits.
Giantism[]
The height of trees on Earth is limited by the ability of plant tissue to transport water; In Pandora's low gravity, trees are much taller, so even herbaceous plants, such as scorpion thistle or chalice plant, often grow several times larger than an average human, and those with mechanical tissues rigid, for example, the beanstalk palm and the hometree. It reaches astonishing sizes in several hundred meters.
Bioluminescence[]
Pandora's flora is bioluminescent and the Pandora forest at night is incredibly beautiful, glowing with all colors from violet and indigo blue to bright red. Not all plants show bioluminescence to the same extent; for example, lionberry, cillaphant and grub plant do not glow at night, but bladder polyp, delta tree and vein pod a fairly bright glow.
Special Properties[]
Symbiosis[]
On Pandora, symbiotic relationships are widespread, both between plants of the same genus (Magellum trees are the most famous example) and between organisms of different levels of development and even classes; for example, the hellfire wasp often enters into symbiosis with the crown plant, using its pitchers as nests and protecting it from predators, the mantis orchid “uses the services” of a single type of insect for pollination of flowers and protection, but the direhorse pitcher attracts very large animals as pollinators, the direhorse.
Zooplantae[]
The most interesting life forms are those that have characteristics of both plants and animals. These zooplantae (also called "planimals") possess the rudiments of a nervous system, which gives them a kind of "organic intelligence" found in primitive animals; Thanks to some analogue of the nervous system, these creatures are capable of quite complex movements. These creatures continue to surprise and delight botanists and zoologists, who are now forced to approach the question of the mechanics of life in a different way.
Systematization[]
Although Pandora plants have been given Latin names using the standard nomenclature accepted on Earth, their taxonomy has not yet been studied. There is also a guide to Pandoran Botany written by Dr. Grace Augustine.
The entire diversity of Pandora plants can be divided according to the type of nutrition: among them are autotroph, that is, synthesizing organic substances from inorganic ones through photosynthesis, mixotroph, that is, combining photosynthesis with predation; these are carnivorous, saprotrophic plants, that is, fungi that feed on decomposers organic matter and parasites that feed on other organisms.
