Rock Orchid is flora in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. The rock orchid cone can be gathered from this plant and used as a gear crafting material. They are most commonly found in the Boulderlands biome of the Clouded Forest, however, rarer rock orchids can be found above the Ensnared Lake in the northeast of the Clouded Forest. Best-quality rock orchid cones can be harvested in dry weather. Rock orchids are circular plants composed of layers of leaves which have a sturdy exterior, and a soft fleshy interior. They are mostly found in rocky terrain, where the exterior of their leaves allows them to blend in with their environment.
Thanks to a degree of maneuverability with its leaves, rock orchids are able to enclose their vulnerable interior, forming a shell with the hard exterior of their leaves. This is an effective defense mechanism from predators and harsh weather conditions.
The interior of their leaves is capable of metabolizing energy through photosynthesis. As a result, rock orchids will wait for the sun to be in the sky, and then periodically unveil their vulnerable interior to nourish themselves. While the rock orchid is open, it further exposes a series of tendrils at its core, each containing seed pods which are carried away by the wind.
Should a creature enter its close proximity while it is its vulnerable state, rock orchids strategically avoid the temptation to retreat back into their shell state. This is because they don't want to draw attention to themselves -- preferring instead to be mistaken as regular foliage.
Rock orchids can be found throughout temperate regions of the Western Frontier. They predominantly favor rocky terrain, as they can camouflage within their environment better. So long as they are not in a state of photosynthesizing, they will often remain undetected.
The Kame'tire Clan utilizes the rock orchid in a number of ways. These include harvesting its seeds for crafting purposes, as well as consuming the fleshy interior of its leaves for the nourishing properties. However, harvesting any element of a rock orchid requires Na'vi to wait for it to enter its open state. As such, gathering resources from a rock orchid is regarded as a lesson in patience for novice gatherers.
