The Science Operations, also called SciOps, is a branch of the Resources Development Administration focused on academic science and research operating on the exo-moon Pandora. Their aim is to explore and understand more about the native systems and subsystems and environmental spheres, (anthrosphere, geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere atmosphere) in various fashions, ranging from botany, zoology, anthropology and xenolinguistics of the Na'vi, and more.

History[]

SciOps research

SciOps personnel make up the bulk of the Avatar Program as of the 2150s, developing and using remotely controlled human-Na'vi hybrids known as avatars for field work and to establish friendly contact with the natives.[1] [2] They also had a role in The Ambassador Program where the children were studied by them.

Compared to the RDA's Mining Operations and Security Operations, staffing and funding for SciOps remains low, as the RDA administration prefers to invest the majority of its funds into the far more profitable unobtanium mining operations. The ongoing discourse between the Pandoran-based scientific community, who remain devoted to researching the geology, flora, fauna and indigenous cultures of the moon, and the greedy corporate interests of the RDA sponsors, leads only to frequent ideological conflicts between the staffs and the administrators.[2]

SciOps conducted inhumane experiments on Pandoran wildlife. For example, in the abandoned Research Station Alpha, scientists, including former RDA and now Resistance scientist Hajir Beshara, severed the queue of wild animals to control them. This was highly unsuccessful and only turned the animals into raging ferals.
