The shimmyfly (Na'vi name: lortsyal) is a Pandoran insect equivalent to butterflies on Earth. In the Valley of Mo'ara, the shimmyfly only appears near the Kaspavan River.
Anatomy[]
An eight-winged insect with long antennae, Shimmyflies have multiple glowing, iridescent wings and a delicate build. Its body is built like Terran insects and divided into a head and thorax. The abdomen portion of the shimmyfly is constructed of two smaller vane-like hindwings and a long rudder-like tail.
Lifecycle[]
The shimmyfly is very similar to the Terran butterfly, starting its life off as a caterpillar. It feeds on leaves until it presumably forms a chrysalis and emerges later in its adult form. From there, it feeds on flower nectar.
In Na'vi Culture[]
Shimmyfly wings are used by the Na'vi in crafting, a notable example being the necklace worn by Mo'at of the Omatikaya clan, although it appears to be purely ceremonial.
