Skunk Palm is flora in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
This plant grows a fruit with a repulsive odor, which will cause wildlife to keep their distance if broken open. The fruit will burst open when hit directly or otherwise damaged, coating anything nearby with the repellent odor. The full effect of this is not noted, yet the odor stays on for some time.
The skunk palm tree is a tree that grows a single, gnarled trunk crowned with long florets, its bark is formed of the drying, fibrous leaves that coat its length, leaving heavy scarring at its woodier base with softer, smoother growth further up the tree. Before they inevitably dry and break, its leaves are long and pointed, with yellow or red tips.
The skunk palm flowers at irregular intervals, growing round, watery fruit. These yellow fruit pods slowly gain mass until, when fully ripe, they drop from the tree and burst on the ground to distribute seeds.
The skunk palm favors clear growing conditions and is not keen on shade. The tree is noted for its general stench which most wildlife take pains to avoid. The juice and burst flesh of the skunk palm pod has an extremely repellent odor.
The stench of the skunk palm is well known to Na'vi who use the stinking fruit flesh to repel hostile wildlife. The pod-like fruit, particularly when burst, will disperse any creature with a sensitive nose. It is not unheard of for Na'vi to rub the fruit flesh on their skin to keep wildlife away. Although this approach is clever, it does not make them popular with their kin.
