The Spear-thrower is an unusual ranged weapon that requires the user's own arm motion to fire its ammunition. A type of "hand catapult", the Spear-thrower is an extremely archaic and primitive ranged weapon used and made by the Na'vi clans of the Western Frontier.

Materials and Construction[]

Constructed largely from the bone of an animal (Usually the thigh bone) and reinforced with rope, the Spear-thrower is a surprisingly simple weapon, as it is nothing more than a stick with a hook on one end to hold the ammunition in place. When thrown, the extended length of the weapon would propel the spear at far greater strength, range and power than if it was thrown regularly by hand.

In Game[]

In Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, the Spear-thrower is a short-ranged, fast shooting weapon that launches spears at frightening speeds. Whilst the effective range is, as aforementioned, shorter than other Na'vi weapons, the missile it throws are incredibly hard hitting and able to take down large targets in a few hits. Moreover, its reload time is incredibly fast, and it is one of the only two Na'vi ranged weapons that does not have a lengthy aiming time. In a sense, the Spear-thrower functions as a rough analogue of a Na'vi shotgun.

As a Na'vi weapon, the Spear-thrower is quite versatile and can use two types of ammunition. The first is the Hunting Spears (The basic ammunition for the weapon and the cheapest to construct) and the Shellbreaker Spears (Armour-piercing spears capable of piercing the thick hides of megafauna or the armour of vehicles).

Trivia[]

  • The Spear-thrower is also known as the atlatl (at-latle) and is considered one of the most ancient forms of ranged weapons in the real world.
