The Surveying Balloon are large unmanned aerial vehicles used primarily by the RDA as a form of energy-free surveillance for data analysis. These balloons are found throughout the Western Frontier as an obstacle that could be destroyed.[1].

Specifications/Overview[]

These balloons are triangular in shape. The shape is important, as these balloons can be combined with one another to further enhance their data and intelligence analysis.[1]

As it is largely an aircraft meant for surveillance, they are equipped with various sensors and camera feeds that is hung underneath the balloon to give the RDA intel on the environment.[1] Despite their large size, they are defenseless and must rely on the protection of a couple of nearby Scorpion Gunships against Na'vi aerial assaults.[1]

The balloons are largely constructed from aluminium fabric with a metal skeletal frame on its 'head' which would allow RDA engineers or scientists to safely land as an aerial platform for data collection/maintenance.[2] They are powered by solar cells, allowing for long-term duration surveillance. Their floatation is done through hydrogen, as can be seen when they are destroyed, they explode violently in a giant fireball.[1] They are at risk of sabotage, such as hacking via SID which will expose their vulnerable batteries that can cause a catastrophic chain reaction.[1]

Some balloons are known to carry a sonar beacon. These beacons are situated on the 'head' and are electronically shielded.[3][2]
