A clumsy artisan, Taheywu struggles to find his place among his peers. He admires Nefika and wants to be a great student but constantly makes mistakes. Other students are embarrassed by his mistakes and tend to ignore him. His awkward fumbling is at odds with a clan that values beauty, artistry and elegance.
His older sister Vefilu is great hunter, and his mother Nawuk is a great artist. He feels he needs to honor family values and traditions by choosing one of these paths. His clumsiness precluded him from hunting so he turned to art.
Smitten with fellow weaving apprentice, Koranu, this is the first time he has ever been in love and is desperate for advice. He's determined to show his love through actions. He has a romanticized view of the world, especially his love. He's willing to see the good in everyone and is desperate to prove himself worthy.
