Thorny Paw

The thorny paw (Na'vi name: ele'wll) is a large succulent cactus-like plant with long barbed spines at growing tips, short spines all over, and no leaves.

It stores water in its tissues and spines prevent it from being eaten. The spines are ejected forcefully when the plant is disturbed. They live in salty soils high in ammonium.

Like many plants on Pandora, they display bioluminescence. They glow a teal-like green with a cell-like pattern.

Trivia[]

Neytiri bears a strong resemblance to Thorneypaws, a minor character in the 1985 comic Timespirits. However, the developers of Avatar did not mention it as a visual influence. The plant may have been a tongue-in-cheek reference to the similarity between Neytiri and Thorneypaws.
