James Cameron paints "A tall, thin woman with blue skin, who is wearing skin-tight purple pants", on a plain of "magenta grass". This would later influence the design of Neytiri, who does indeed wear such garb during the film. The plains also went on to become the basis for the area inhabited by the Horse Clan of the Plains.

Cameron also made a series of paintings, showing "jagged, vertical mountains or cliffs wreathed by clouds and mist". These paintings contain "material that was not used in the Avatar film but may be used in Avatar sequels". Cameron also completes his first short film, Xenogenesis. Many themes that would later appear in Avatar existed in the treatment and script for the film, including an early Fan Lizard, a glowing willow tree and bioluminescent moss.

Cameron later used the name "Xenomorph" for the creatures in the Alien franchise.
