Whisperstalk

The whisperstalk is flora in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

The whisperstalk plant grows from a thick central stem, crowned with a single, orbicular leaf. This leathery, concave leaf surrounds a far smaller flowering head that grows thick with furry stamens.

The whisperstalk can detect sound and will turn to follow the vibrations of a passing animal. Within the stalk of the plant is a collection of chambers and fibrous cells that resembles a "syrinx," the vocal organ of many Earth birds. The whisperstalk uses this "organ" to mimic the footsteps and vocalizations of the Na'vi, echoing what it has "heard" some moments before.

The whisperstalk is native to the Clouded Forest region of the Western Frontier and grows in small patches, rarely propagating far. The plant is largely epiphytic and grows in clusters on tree bark and moss. It is infrequently found growing on porous rock, away from the forest floor.

Many Na'vi hunters have been fooled by the mimicry of the whisperstalk, tracking the sound of footsteps to a patch of the echoing plant.
