Woodsprites are zooplantae, which have both animal and plant characteristics. They are similar in appearance to small deep-sea jellyfish, but they float on the wind like dandelion seeds, possibly aided in this by the denser atmosphere on Pandora.
These seeds, according to the Na'vi, are very pure and sacred spirits. The Na'vi revere the woodsprites and consider them bearers of omens and signs of sanctity.[1] Furthermore, these seeds are believed to be auspicious wheresoever they choose to rest.
Woodsprites also hold ritual importance. The Omatikaya clan plants one of these seeds with the body of a deceased Na'vi, so the Na'vi's spiritual essence will become part of Eywa.
They often gather in areas of sacred importance, such as the Cavern of Songs.
Avatar Series[]
Woodsprites gathering around Kiri
In Avatar, a woodsprite lands on the tip of Neytiri's arrow moments before she is about to kill Jake Sully using her bow. Later, many woodsprites lay on Jake, resulting in Neytiri taking him to the clan's Hometree because she interpreted this event as a sign from Eywa. When Jake undergoes his consciousness transfer, many woodsprites gathered around him.
On the old Pandorapedia, their Na'vi name was written with an apostrophe. However, in the new Pandorapedia, it lacks it for unknown reasons and is possibly an error.
In 2019, when Avengers Endgame surpassed Avatar at the box office, James Cameron made a post: "Oel ngati kameie, I see you Marvel. Congratulations to Avengers: Endgame on becoming the new box-office king." Attached was an image of Iron Man with woodsprites.
