The yavä' is a poisonous green fog found mostly in the northwestern area of Clouded Forest in the Western Frontier of Pandora, with small pockets of yavä' can be found elsewhere in the forest. The yavä' is deadly and will cause confusion and compromised vision while traversing through it.

The fog is formed from the use of caustic chemicals to dissolve the dead Sarentu after the massacre at the clan moot site, the Circle of Songs. These chemicals reacted with Pandoran minerals and created the dangerous fog known to the Na'vi as yavä'. Thanks to its formation, John Mercer and Angela Harding were able to hide evidence of the massacre committed against the Sarentu from both the RDA and other Na'vi clans.[1]

A Kame'tire herbalist named Siul tirelessly investigated the yavä', but died in the course of his research. Okul, Siul's apprentice, followed in his footsteps after his death, and continued studying the yavä’ in the hopes of creating an antidote. They later were successful, albeit only in small quantities, producing only enough antidote for the protagonist to become immune to the effects of the yavä'.

The protagonist was able to uncover the truth about the massacre and the origins of the yavä' due to Okul's antidote.

Trivia[]

  • Based on some observation, some floras are able to thrive in the fog but the absence of fauna indicates its harm to animals and Na'vi.
  • The word yavä' is a combination of the Na'vi words for "air" (ya) and "unpleasant to the senses; noisome" (vä'), therefore literally meaning "unpleasant air."
  • Based on labels found on chemical barrels at the clan moot site, sodium hydroxide, or lye, was the chemical used to dissolve the bodies in a process known as alkaline hydrolysis.
